Each day we wake up and go about our day not knowing what we will encounter. About two years ago, my husband and I were helping our son and his wife with a house renovation. As often in construction, there was a lot more work to do than was initially expected. While watching our granddaughter, I received an urgent phone call telling me that my husband had cut an artery in his leg and he was on his way from the city dump to the hospital in an ambulance. That day they were unloading a trailer full of the excavated items from the old home. As my husband lifted an old toilet (which he did not know was broken) to throw it off the trailer, the toilet swung around to slice open his leg. Porcelain is very sharp, and it cut deep, fast!
I hurried to gather the baby and drive to the hospital. In doing so, I was quickly acquainting myself to the baby car seat, my son’s stick shift car, and the unknown hospital location. While following the map’s vocal instruction, I took a moment to pray in my heart. Then, with my eyes wide open, I took a moment to asked God, “Is this it for my husband?” The answer came in a still small of knowing within my heart and mind. “He is going to be alright.”
Beginning and ending each day in communication with a loving Father in Heaven helps me develop my relationship with Him; it also helps me better understand myself and be more present in my relationships with others.
I am grateful in times of chaos and fear to know I can pray at any time, anywhere with open eyes and an open heart – because we never know if it is going to be one of those ‘toilet’ days.
Practice 8 = God is Great! Find time to listen with your heart.
